What it is
Turn the music that moves you into something unmistakably yours. In this live class I open up my own remix process, from choosing the source to aligning the vocal, finding the pocket and shaping an arrangement you can keep building.
I work in Ableton Live, start to finish, on one cleared song, so you hear every decision as it happens and why it works. Follow along in your own session or watch and take notes.
The grid serves the music, the vocal leads, and the goal is to reinterpret rather than copy. That is the whole philosophy, and we put it to work.
Free: the Remix Roadmap, the seven decisions this class teaches from
Who it is for
DJs moving into production, and producers who can already import audio and find their way around a DAW but keep getting stuck at an eight bar loop.
If you are newer than that, you are welcome to come and watch. The follow along steps just assume the basics.
What you leave with
- A repeatable process for turning a song into a remix that sounds like you
- How to find tempo, key and phrasing, and what to do when half time or double time fools the grid
- How to warp and align a vocal without wrecking its phrasing
- A drum and bass pocket that lets the vocal lead
- An arrangement map for your first 16 to 32 bars and where the track goes next
- The seven decision Remix Roadmap worksheet
- The replay, for 30 days after the class
How the 2.5 hours run
- 4:00Welcome, the finished remix, and an audio check
- 4:10Choosing the song and the feeling it should become, and what you are allowed to do with it
- 4:25Tempo, key, phrasing and structure. Half time, double time, and when the grid is lying
- 4:45Bringing in the vocal, warping it, finding the downbeat, keeping the phrasing
- 5:05Break
- 5:10Drums and bass. Finding the pocket and comparing two grooves
- 5:30Transforming the hook, building contrast, and mapping the arrangement
- 5:50Exporting a reference, the finishing checklist, and permissions before you share
- 6:00Your questions, answered in the session
Before the day
- A computer and good headphones
- Ableton Live if you want to follow along. The ideas carry to any DAW, the steps I show are in Ableton
- Basic comfort importing audio and moving around your DAW
- A stable connection. The room link comes by email before the class
- The practice files and the worksheet arrive by email the day before
What it does not do
- You will not leave with a finished, mixed and mastered release. You leave with the process, a strong first section and a plan
- It is a live demonstration with questions, not one to one feedback on twenty projects
- Coming to the class does not give you the right to release a remix of somebody else's song. Use your own material or get permission
- Refunds in full if you ask at least 48 hours before we start. After that you keep the replay
Take it
